“NORA! DAISY!” CELIA reprimanded as the girls ran screeching through the kitchen, chasing one another. Celia was pulling the biscuits out of the oven to go with the soup she had made for supper just as she heard John coming in the front door.

“Papa! You’re home!” Savannah shouted, just as a loud crash from the living room had Celia closing her eyes, wondering what the girls had broken this time. The girls weren’t badly behaved, but Nora and Daisy got easily riled, and when they began chasing one another around, there was no telling the things that could get broken in the process.

“Celia, can you clean up the broken lamp in the living room?” John requested, coming through the kitchen with Daisy and Nora in hand.

“I’ll get it,” Celia answered, grabbing the broom and dustpan and heading for the living room. She shook her head, thinking they would need to pick up several new lamps. This was the third one the girls had broken since they adopted them two days ago.

She sighed. Tomorrow they were taking the girls to get enrolled in school. They had wanted to give them a couple of days to settle in to their new surroundings before starting them in school, but Celia thought the girls needed school in order to give them something to do during the day.

“Savannah, go call Sadie and Clara for supper, please,” Celia requested.

“Yes, Mama,” Savannah rushed upstairs. She had been eager for Clara to come down and play, but when Clara and Sadie started bickering for the third time that afternoon Celia sent both of them to sit on their beds.

She carefully cleaned up the shards from the lamp, checking thoroughly for any pieces she may have missed. The thought of missing a piece, and having one of the girls cut her foot on it, had her worried.

“Celia?”

She turned at the sound of Sadie’s voice, “Yes?”

“I’m sorry me and Clara fought so much before,” Sadie apologized quietly.

“Thank you, honey. Go on and wash up for supper, all right?”

Sadie nodded, and Celia took care of the glass she’d swept up before washing up herself and getting supper on the table.

Supper turned out to be a much quieter affair than lunch. At lunch, Celia had Sadie and Clara bickering and Nora and Daisy chattering nonstop. But as they sat down to supper, the children all seemed rather subdued. Savannah was the only one who seemed her usual self.

“Do you want me to go to the mercantile for some lamps?” she asked John as they ate, thinking of the single lamp the girls hadn’t broken in her and John’s room.

“No, I picked up a couple on my way home,” he answered.

“I’m sorry Nora and Daisy broke those lamps,” Sadie apologized.

“Sadie, you don’t need to apologize for your sisters,” John said seriously. “You are not responsible for what they do.”

“Maybe not, but they know better,” Sadie said, frowning at them.

“And they were punished for it,” John answered. “Sadie, I don’t want you getting after your sisters.
